Responsibility in Instruction

One of the #1 things that bothers me when I see instruction in anything is the lack of responsibility to insure a student/clients well-being physically & mentally.

It's important for everyone to take into consideration, "Does this really help me, or just help him/her make a quick buck off of me by stroking my ego???"

Great Acupuncture

Anyone on the Eastside (Bellevue), or in the greater Seattle area that's looking for a great Acupuncturist/Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner should see Dr. Miao of East Asian Well Being.

Not only has she helped with a lot of the chronic issues my family and myself have had, just the other day, after getting injured - limiting range of motion and experience tremendous discomfort for 3 straight days, Dr. Miao was able to reduce the pain and get me functioning to 85%!

If you've experienced doctors in the past, like myself who seem to just rush you out of your appointment, make you pay a copay to just be told to take aleve, you'll definitely appreciate Dr. Miao's patience & care in hearing your problems, and really focusing and following up to make sure you're improving.

Lessons from a Teacher: Ronald Ogi

Ron Ogi was introduced into my life through Martial Arts by our fellow teacher, James DeMile. However, his role in my life has been not just of a friend, or teaching in martial arts, but also one of a mentor in life. It makes sense though when you consider he's had teachers like Elizabeth Kübler-Ross for example.

Like my previous post Lesson from a Teacher: (Sijo) James DeMile this post will list off JUST A FEW of some Ron's sayings (in some cases paraphrased) that have become integral to my own life.

Gravity

As Marty McFly said in the movie Back to the Future..."That's Heavy!"
That was my reaction when reaching an epiphany of sorts during my MovNat training last night that relates to movement in general - physically and in life!

Never the same...

While teaching/coaching the other day, my "clients" and I were discussing growth.

Lessons from a teacher: (Sijo) James DeMile

(Sijo) James DeMile is often known as "an original Bruce Lee student", a martial artist, founder of Wing Chun Do Gung-Fu & DeMile Defensive Tactics. He is known for his fighting ability and his insight on technique with saying things like:

  • "The best way to win a fight is to walk away and avoid it, or END IT before it begins!"
  • "The fight should not last no more than 2 seconds on the high side!"
  • "Doomatize the opponent!"
  • "Fighting is not a social event! You do not bring a sack lunch to a fight."
But I have come to know Jim DeMile for someone more than just "Sijo". Though Sijo might mean Founder, I call him "Sijo" as an affectionate way to call him my mentor, a father figure, and most importantly My FRIEND. What you're about to read are a few of his "sayings", or better yet...words of wisdom - as he said or wrote them, but sayings that have little to do with him as a Martial Artist. Instead they have to do with him as a Friend helping a less experienced friend get a better grasp of how to deal with life. Here is insight into not "Sijo" DeMile the martial artist, but rather Jim DeMile, a regular human being...a GREAT friend!

Combo Training

When it comes to the Practical Fitness side of I.A.M. we always make sure that each person starts developing efficient skill in each of the techniques of our human movement domains. Later on we get you to stack the different movements skills into what are called combos. The following clip gives you an idea of the different combos for the different types of practitioners we have.

Age is a mindset

I've seen first-hand people in their 70s competing in the World Championship Ironman triathlon in Kailua-Kona, HI ("The Big Island"), and FINISHING the race!

Yet several years ago I heard a 27-year-old say he's "too old" to play basketball at a friend's birthday party.

Here's an intelligent man, who learned the genius of never letting his years on earth dictate how he should act, or how active he should be. He like those Ironman competitors are people I strive to be like...the type that doesn't let society, or people around them dictate how they should act.

Funeral & Family

It’s officially been one week since the Funeral of one of my teachers…Jesse Raymond Glover, Bruce Lee’s 1st student & founder of Non-Classical Gung-Fu (NCGF), father figure, and friend to many.

I still feel a bit numb.

Why I strongly dislike "Wing Chun Do" Gung-Fu

I personally don’t like the name…what I’ve learned from James DeMile is NOT Wing Chun, but I can understand the reason for its inception.

My Fitness Journey, & Why MovNat?

Since the age of 13, I’ve been introduced to the idea of principles, and the importance they can play in helping you understand yourself, and through that…better yourself.

Influences forever to be missed...Forever Loved & Appreciated!

Since November of 2010, those of us who participate in the world of Martial Arts & Self-defense, particularly with those connected to Bruce Lee (whom I'm aware of), have been experiencing loss in our great "hall of fame" of teachers.
