News & updates!

The past several weeks have been fantastic!

We've had new students/participants enroll in ALL of our programs at the Shoreline Spartan Rec Center with many of our previous students continuing on to improve their movement quality, and make the efficient techniques instinctually natural to them!

Children's Program
Since we're one of the few "schools" with a dedicated children's program offering MovNat instruction, the process of making the program really great has been both fun, educational, and enlightening! Many of the parents that are aware of my background in Martial Arts have asked that I offer some aspects of self-defense since I have primarily kept it out of the curriculum. They have also asked if there was some type of merit/reward system similar to Martial arts or Scouts that could be offered to the kids to motivate them to get even better at the natural movement skills that I teach them. To both points the answer is going to be "Yes".

I will go into more detail in the very near future, but I have already been adding movements from the Bruce Lee lineage to the kids that will help them protect themselves on the defensive end of the self-defense spectrum: i.e. awareness strategies, evasive movement, and general martial arts break-fall techniques (as I have on countless occasions heard from former students and Children Black Belt recipients the appreciation they have for learning how to fall without hurting themselves since that is the type of self-defense techniques that they use more often then the ones used in fights).

I'm really excited to see this program evolve and see the kids having fun and getting better and better at their overall movement; helping them become (as Erwan Le Corre says) "Well Rounded with Sharp Edges".

"I Am Fit" Program

One of the things I'm proud of that training in MovNat offers is seeing the participants sweating and smiling at the end of the training session, and knowing that they don't feel like they are going to puke or pass out at any moment. Even better than that is seeing them come back and seeing the movement quality improve! What this illustrates is that gaining better fitness can be a fun and gentle experience. And as the movement quality improves, the volume and level of intensity of the movements can increase more and more, resulting in a stronger conditioned body.

"No Pain, No Gain" is proven to be a ridiculous saying that only is applicable to those that think in order to get the results they want they have to struggle excessively; which is simply just NOT TRUE! I'm not Buddhist, but one of the things I like about what Buddhists strive for is a daily decrease of Stress in life. Since life is full of stress already, why add to it by including excessive, unnecessary & impractical self-imposed stress? It's just not necessary! But finding that balance of pushing one's self in a fun and gentle way is something that MovNat'ing easily provides and I'm happy to see my clients feel better about themselves due to that balance!

The most recent episode of the MovNation Podcast really eloquently articulates the benefits of this type of training as Founder Erwan Le Corre discusses this with the well respected Physical Therapist & "Functional Movement Systems" founder, Gray Cook. You can listen to that podcast here!

"I Am Protected" Program

Finally, our Self-defense program has shown our previous students continue to progress in making the movements more and more natural, but even more importantly REFINED & NATURAL (or Instinctual)! That is something that really brings joy to me because it shows that they have a dedication to getting better (despite the current set-up that the Rec Center is allowing me to have with once-a-week sessions), and shows that this class is more than just a social event to come to.

What's also great is to see the newer students smiling as they see that, though they may not be able to get the maximum results consistently, they are capable of doing so, and doing so with minimal excess effort!

There are 3 things I am striving to have all my students do in all the programs I offer:
Efficency, Adaptability, and Instinctiveness.

The first step is always Efficiency. But Efficiency isn't always about straight lines, or getting things done fast. Efficiency is about getting Maximum Results, with minimal amount of (excessive) effort! In other words, with ease you can reach the highest potential. And nothing makes me prouder than to see my students/clients making progress on their journey to reaching their own, personal maximum potential!

Keep Moving everyone! And Keep Moving MINDFULLY! Till next time...
